| The
focus for AYSO Select is to allow for player development through
age appropriate training. This type of training will afford more
children the opportunity to reach their full potential athletically
while learning various individual skills within a group setting.
In
the U5 - U6 age groups the main emphasis should be:
Ball Mastery
Exercises where each player must work alone with a ball, numerous
repetitions using both feet.
Learning through games
Allow for the introduction of proper motor skill concepts such as
balance, coordination, and agility in concert with rudimentary problem
solving situations.
Play the Game
Free of any coaching from the sidelines!
In the U8 - U12 age groups the building blocks of player development
are:
Ball Mastery
Exercises where each player must work alone with a ball, numerous
repetitions using both feet.
Passing and Receiving
Exercises to improve a player's first touch, so important at all
levels and to encourage and teach accurate creative passing.
Moves to beat an opponent (1v1)
Exercises and games that teach game winning individual moves that
can create space amongst the most packed of defenses.
Speed
Exercises and games that improve acceleration, running with and
without the ball and changes of pace.
Finishing
Exercises and games that teach technique and encourage instinctive
play.
Group
Attack
Exercises and games that improve small-group combination play with
emphasis on fast break attacks.
Play
the Game
Free of any over coaching from the sidelines! The players need to
be allowed the freedom to be creative and apply what they have practiced
during the week.
In the U14 - U18 age groups the following player characteristics
are important:
Technique
Method of accomplishing something; degree of skill one exhibits.
Speed
Rate of movement; rapidity of motion.
Intelligence
Acquired knowledge, information and insight and its application
under pressure.
Personality
The character, characteristics and other qualities of a particular
person as it relates to the game, competition and pressure.
Play
the Game
Even at the older age groups it’s important that the coach not over
coach on game day. The players need the freedom to apply what they
have practiced during the week, develop their creativity and concentration.
The players need to be able to "get in the zone" as individuals
and as a team.
